Donald Trump is waffling like a greased griddle over his policy on reproductive rights. His frantic zigzags show that he knows he’s in trouble, Democratic lawmakers tell What A Day.
- Disgraced former President Donald Trump sent shockwaves through his own anti-abortion base on Thursday evening by announcing that costly IVF treatments would be covered by his administration or insurance if wins. “I was always for IVF,” he told NBC News. He also criticized Florida’s six-week abortion ban as “too short,” while refusing to say how he planned to vote on the state’s November ballot to overturn the ban. Anti-abortion activists clutched their pearls in horror. The Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America group said voting to ditch the Florida ban would “completely undermine” Trump’s previous position. By Friday afternoon, Trump announced he was definitely voting to keep the ban in place. In the chaos, even Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), struggled to make sense of Trump’s IVF remarks. (Vance helped shoot down a bill guaranteeing IVF access earlier this year.)
- Reproductive rights advocates don’t think Trump had a sudden change of heart. This is, after all, the guy who deliberately appointed three conservative Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, making abortion bans possible in states across America. “Donald Trump just says whatever pops into his head at the moment and he thinks will help him,” Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), who has co-chaired the House Pro-Choice Caucus for about two decades, told What A Day. “If he got re-elected, and with a solid majority of his party in the House and Senate who believe that abortion should be illegal, I have no doubt that he would sign a national abortion ban.”
- Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) described Trump’s gameplay on the issue as a three-step maneuver: Move hard right in the Republican primary to cement the support of the Christian right; then obfuscate in the general election to distance himself from an extremist movement and win the election; and, finally, pander to his far-right base to further restrict abortion access, IVF treatments, and other policies outlined in Project 2025’s ultra-MAGA right wing fantasy plan. “All he cares about is getting power,” Raskin told What A Day.

The Harris-Walz campaign is working with Democrats on Capitol Hill on a new plan to protect and restore reproductive freedom across the country, DeGette told What A Day.
- “I'm working with the Harris-Walz campaign and with the Senate on a [reproductive rights] strategy,” DeGette told What A Day on Friday, name-dropping House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Senate Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) — hours before another working call with Democratic leadership on the issue. “I can't tell you specific techniques we would do, but all of those people have committed that it'll be one of the first things that Congress does.”
- Vice President Kamala Harris has told lawmakers that she would sign a bill that would protect reproductive rights if elected president, DeGette said, referencing the Women Health Protection Act — which has already passed the House twice, but hasn’t gone anywhere in the Senate.
- The VP consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate and is making restoring reproductive rights a focal point of her presidential run. On Friday, the Harris campaign announced that it would launch a bus tour in Florida next with surrogates promoting repro rights access, before making at least 50 stops in key states through the fall. “The American people want and deserve the freedom to make their own health care decisions,” Harris-Walz campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement.
Harris’ stance has long been clear on fighting for Americans’ reproductive freedom. After a lot of waffling, Trump is effectively endorsing Florida’s six-week abortion ban.

Israel’s military struck an aid convoy’s vehicle in Gaza, killing five people, after Israel said it was hijacked by militants.
The convoy, organized by U.S. nonprofit Anera, had been delivering medical supplies to a hospital in Rafah, and its route had been coordinated with the Israel Defense Forces, the nonprofit’s Palestine Country Director Sandra Rasheed told the Washington Post. Days earlier, the U.N. accused Israel of firing on a World Food Program truck in the territory.
“During the convoy’s journey, armed militants took control of a vehicle at the front of the convoy,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement. “An attack was carried out against them. No other vehicles in the convoy were harmed, and it reached its destination as planned.”
In a rare move, Israel agreed to pause military operations in Gaza to give polio shots to some 640,000 kids under the age of 10. It’ll happen in a staggered schedule: Children in southern Gaza will be vaccinated in a three-day period beginning Sunday, then those in the north will receive doses during a separate three-day period.
New stats from the United Nations show that more than 250,000 people in Gaza have been displaced in August alone. Meanwhile, Israeli forces also said they killed a top Hamas commander in the West Bank on Friday as the military continues large-scale operations there for the third consecutive day.

JD Vance is refusing to apologize after he mocked Kamala Harris by posting a video of a Miss Teen USA contestant struggling to answer a question — who later contemplated suicide because of the incident. Vance said he didn’t know about the contestant’s personal struggles, but admitted the obvious: He has “said a lot of stupid things on camera” and said it’s best “laugh at ourselves, laugh at this stuff, and try to have some fun in politics.” Interesting that Vance’s idea of “fun” always seems to involve degrading women! Definitely nothing to examine there!
Trump campaign adviser Chris LaCivita responded to his boss’s Arlington National Cemetery fiasco by calling the Secretary of the Army’s office a bunch of “hacks.” Now there’s a surefire way to let everyone know you love and respect this country and its military! Impeccable.
Most Americans don’t think Donald Trump will accept the outcome of November’s presidential election, according to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll. Cool! Great! Normal country!
Two former Georgia election workers defamed by Trump confidante Rudy Guliani are suing him in hopes of getting the former New York mayor’s multi-million dollar homes and World Series rings. They were awarded $146 million in damages last year, and now they’re arguing that Guliani would “never” voluntarily comply, especially after a New York judge threw out his bankruptcy case last month. Fortunately, Giuliani has lots of marketable skills, like screaming conspiracy theories into the void.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is struggling to maintain support in his home state after flopping like a fish on a hot deck in the GOP presidential race, Politico reports. Local school board candidates he supported largely lost their elections, his plan to add golf courses and hotels to Florida state parks faced bipartisan backlash, and state initiatives on abortion access and recreational weed look poised to pass in November despite DeSantis’ opposition. Tonight, we expect DeSantis to go home, take off those heels, and have a drink.
Maryland’s Supreme Court ruled that a 2022 court hearing, which freed Adnan Syed of “Serial” podcast fame from prison, must be redone.
