School Choice Should Be the First Bill Passed

School Choice

I expect and totally support the Governor making school choice the first bill to pass in the upcoming session. Since 2015, when I became Lt. Governor, the Senate has passed school choice five times.

It’s time for the House to finally pass it after eight years of effort by the Senate and me.

On Thursday, I gathered our Republican senators near Dallas for an in-depth discussion on issues and priorities for the upcoming session. Session doesn’t begin until mid-January, but hearings on issues and work on legislation and the budget have already begun. You can’t wait until session starts to begin the work. The Senate is always ready to hit the ground running on day one.

Lunch at Ross Perot’s Ranch

Ranch

After Thursday’s meetings, we had lunch at Ross Perot’s incredible ranch near the new Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) Studios and the studios for Dr. Phil’s Show and his new Merit Street Network. Mel Gibson spoke to us about a new Christian film he’s working on. He made The Passion of the Christ in 2004. In 2004, a baseball cap was distributed to the media promoting the film, and I still have it to this day. He was surprised I still had it when I gave it to him to sign. In my view, that movie is the most important film ever made.

The senators then had a chance to visit with Dr. Phil. He moved his show from California to Texas because of our shared values. Dr. Phil had lived here previously.

If you missed the show I did with Dr. Phil and Matt Crouch a few weeks ago—Did God save President Trump from an assassin, or was it just pure luck?—you can watch it here. I think you will find it very interesting.

A Vision for Texas

Texas is rapidly becoming a key state for television and movie entertainment.

My vision is to make Texas the movie and television capital of the world. The Senate and I have worked with Taylor Sheridan, creator of Yellowstone and many more spin-offs and new series, to relocate most of his productions and, eventually, all of his shows to be shot in Texas. We don’t want “Hollywood values” imported to Texas; we want to export Texas values to the world.

We are also working with Taylor, and now TBN, to create academic courses in our community colleges and universities that will train Texans for careers in the industry. Georgia currently produces the most shows in America and employs 60,000 people in the industry.

Texas Removes Over One Million Ineligible Voters

Since Senate Bill 1, written by Senator Bryan Hughes, R-Tyler, became law in 2021, over one million ineligible voters have been removed from Texas’ voter rolls.

Our primary goal with SB 1 was to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat, and this bill has achieved exactly that.

On Monday, I joined Carl Higbie on his program to discuss this and more. Click here to watch the interview.

My Official Statement on the Secretary of State’s Election Audit Report of Harris County

As I have mentioned several times, many key bills regarding voter integrity and elections passed the Texas Senate only to be killed in the Texas House under the leadership of Speaker Dade Phelan. Most never even received a hearing in committee. The Texas Senate passed 23 election-related bills that did not pass the House. These bills would have been a step toward restoring the public’s confidence in fair and honest elections in the State of Texas. It’s an absolute disgrace that Speaker Phelan killed these critical bills.
