Last night, Officer Darron Burks of the Dallas Police Department was brutally ambushed and murdered while on patrol in the area of South Oak Cliff.
Officer Burks, a former school teacher, was in his rookie year serving on the police force. One of his final actions was to call for backup. Two responding officers were also subsequently shot in the incident; one is still listed in critical condition. Tragedies like this one are senseless and avoidable.
The situation in Dallas is dire. The Dallas Police Department operates under a severe staffing shortage that actively harms our community. Our City Council must address this ASAP.
