Dear Friend,
It's Joe Courtney. Here with an update on lead pipe replacement in New London, fair season in Brooklyn, and more from the week. As always, thanks for starting your weekend here with me.
New London Sets the Pace on Lead Pipe Replacement
After we narrowly passed the Infrastructure Law in 2021, New London was the first community in Connecticut to secure federal funding for clean drinking water. Now, it's the first to break ground on lead pipe replacement.
Last Friday, I joined Mayor Passero and EPA Regional Administrator David Cash at one of the replacement sites. Thanks to the Infrastructure Law, the timeline for New London to replace all of its lead-lined pipes has been cut from 20 years to just three years.
Exposure to lead has devastating developmental and physical impacts on our children, and the presence of lead-lined water pipes puts communities at risk. Thanks to the Infrastructure Law, communities like New London are able to extract lead pipes from their neighborhoods.
Kudos to local officials in New London. They are setting the pace for all of Connecticut.
Fair Season in Brooklyn
There were so many great booths and vendors at the Brooklyn Fair last weekend! I had the chance to catch up with the Ekonk Community Grange and Sterling First Selectman Lincoln Cooper, the Natchaug River Young Marines, and the Connecticut Air National Guard.
Thank you to all of the organizers, vendors, volunteers, and attendees who make the Brooklyn Fair such a success every year.
Celebrating Workers
Happy Labor Day weekend!
Eastern Connecticut is home to America's manufacturing renaissance, powered by thousands of good paying union jobs. In Congress, I am committed to making sure every worker has the opportunity to skill-up and access these rewarding careers.
Back in 2015, I secured federal funding to launch our region's nationally recognized Manufacturing Pipeline Initiative. The program has now connected over 3,800 trainees to good careers. Thanks in large part to this training effort, the Norwich-New London region was the fastest growing job market in Connecticut in 2023. Clearly, a lot of that is being driven by Electric Boat where, in 2023, the company hired an eye-watering 5,300 new employees.
To build on this great success, I launched the Hire Hartford Initiative alongside Congressman Larson, the Navy, and industry in July to expand the jobs and training boom to the greater Hartford region. This means more workers across the state will be able to reap the benefits of the great middle class manufacturing careers our region has to offer.
The great job growth is very encouraging, but I know there’s more work to be done to support our workers and families, namely lowering the costs of everyday goods. I am committed to keeping up my work in Congress to lower grocery costs, build more affordable housing, and extend cost-savings on prescription drugs for Medicare enrollees to all Americans.
Give Me a Call
Next Wednesday, September 4th, at 5:00pm, I'm hosting a live telephone town hall to discuss my bipartisan work in Congress to lower costs, boost submarine production, and create good-paying jobs across the state.
Call (855) 905-3301 at the time of the event to participate. You can also listen to the town hall live at courtney.house.gov/live.
Eastern CT Represented at the Paralympic Games
Good luck to Madison’s Ben Washburne! He is rowing for Team USA at the Paralympic games! Ben’s quest for gold began this morning in the PR3 mixed coxed four competition, where he and his teammates finished first in their heat. Go Ben!
Thank you for taking some time to read my update. If we can be of any assistance, don't hesitate to give my Norwich office a call at (860) 886-0139. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Joe Courtney
Member of Congress
