Dear John,
I hope you had a great week!
On Tuesday I got to meet with several local leaders in Hastings to mark Overdose Awareness Day. I was honored to speak at this event alongside law enforcement and community advocates - all working to end the fentanyl crisis in our communities.
As a mom, I understand the fear parents are facing about the opioid crisis. And I know it is going to take a whole-of-community approach to tackle this emergency. That means ensuring local law enforcement have the tools to fight back and hold criminals accountable, and ensuring folks have the support they need to prevent overdoses and get into recovery. It can’t be one or the other – we have to do both.
Over the past year, I have worked closely with Bridgette Norring, who tragically lost her son Devin to fentanyl poisoning at age 19. He bought a counterfeit pill from a drug dealer on Snapchat to help deal with dental pain. That pill was 100% fentanyl. That's why we worked together to introduce a bill in his memory to save lives - the Cooper Davis and Devin Norring Act. Our bill will hold social media companies accountable for drug sales happening on their platforms and ensure local law enforcement have what they need to prosecute these criminals to the fullest extent of the law.
In addition, following my push, the President signed my bipartisan END FENTANYL Act into law which would help prevent fentanyl from crossing the southern border. Stopping fentanyl from entering our country is an important step in reducing overdose deaths.
Events like the Hastings Overdose Awareness Day are so important because they bring the community together toward a common goal – ending the fentanyl crisis. I’ll keep working across the aisle to get the results our communities need.
Here’s what I was up to this week:
Supporting local law enforcement
It was great to meet with Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association including Chief Brady Juell of Savage and Chief Roger New of Eagan, in my Eagan office to discuss how we can keep working together to ensure Minnesota’s local law enforcement get the tools & support they need to keep our communities safe and secure.
Fixing the post office
I visited with USPS leadership in Eagan for an update on the mail service issues Minnesotans have been experiencing. I won't stop pushing until we see positive change across the state – and that’s what I told USPS regional leadership this week.
Protecting Minnesotan’s right to fertility treatments
I toured RM&IA Fertility Clinic in Woodbury to learn more about the reproductive health services they provide. I’ll always fight to ensure every woman, no matter where they live, can access the reliable reproductive care they need – and I’ll make sure the government stays out of it.
Behind the scenes with Rep. Craig:
Some members of my team had the amazing opportunity to visit Camp Ripley this week with the Minnesota National Guard. They got to tour the facility and meet with the brave soldiers who protect our freedoms – thank you for helping us learn how to better serve you in Congress and thank you for all the work you do to keep our nation safe and secure.
I hope you enjoy your Labor Day weekend! It is an important time to celebrate the progress we’ve made in workers’ rights and how far we have to go until all workers get the pay and working conditions they deserve.
Until next time,
Angie Craig
Member of Congress
