Dear John,

As many of us spend time with friends and family this long weekend, I wanted to take a moment to reflect. Labor Day is the result of countless individuals fighting for and winning protections for workers. That is why it is so inspiring that the Biden-Harris administration has taken up that mantle and has implemented the most pro-worker agenda in my lifetime.

Labor Day

The Department of Labor is working to protect over 30 million workers at risk for heat-related illness. The proposed rule would require employers to develop an injury and illness prevention plan to control heat hazards in workplaces affected by excessive heat.

Not only that, but the Department of Labor took steps to make more workers to be eligible for overtime pay. By raising salary thresholds for overtime eligibility, the Department of Labor has empowered over 4.3 million more workers to be paid overtime for any hours worked past 40 hours/week. This will lead to over $1.5 billion annually to be transferred from employers to the workers to make ends meet.

All of these actions are under the leadership of Acting Secretary Julie Su, an amazing advocate for workers. I am honored to work alongside her in our fight to grow the middle class and worker power in our nation.

Rep. Mark Takano with Acting Secretary of Labor, Julie Su

In addition to the achievements of this Administration, I am proud that momentum for the 32-hour workweek is growing! Earlier this year, Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced a Seante companion bill to my 32-Hour Workweek Act. Now both chambers in Congress are able to consider and debate the next step in the story of labor in our country. Earlier this year, Sen. Sanders lead a Senate hearing which featured voices in labor, academia, and business to discuss how our country is ready for a 32-hour workweek.

So, enjoy the long weekend! And let’s remember the organizers and workers who have secured protections, safety, and dignity for all of us.

Sincerely,
