Free
Paper Shredding Event with Rep. Mandy Steele
Senator Williams Harrison Township
Office, 1826 Union Avenue, Natrona Heights, PA 15065
Saturday, September 7th from 9 - 11 am
The FBI has identified discarded paper as one of the principal sources
of information used in identity theft. But how do you know what to
keep and what to shred? As a general rule, you should shred extra
copies of anything with sensitive information about you, such as your
signature, medical info, legal info, banking info, tax info, or your
social security number. Keep original copies of these documents in a
safe place in your home where you can access them in an emergency.
While you’re cleaning up, if you realize that you’re
missing important documents like your birth certificate or Social
Security card, let us know! We can help you get a new copy.
Each car can shred up to two bankers boxes of paper (for reference a
bankers box is about the size of a microwave). Please remove all metal
fasteners other than staples before the event! Shredding will be
performed on site. Bags and boxes will be returned to your car after
they are emptied.
We’ll also be collecting Halloween
costumes for our costume drive during the shredding event!

Good News
Kayak Trip Highlights the Allegheny
River’s Beauty and Needs
On Friday,
Friends of the Riverfront, the Port of Pittsburgh Commission, and the
Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission organized an amazing opportunity
to kayak through the CW Bill Young Lock on the Allegheny River. Thanks
to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission for keeping everyone safe on
our trip!
A decrease in staffing in these locks would be
devastating to our river communities and to every Pittsburgher who
boats, kayaks, takes a walk with their families, or uses the Allegheny
River (Pennsylvania’s River of the Year!) for recreation. I'm so
grateful to be a part of the Save the Allegheny River (STAR) coalition
and had a great time sharing the morning with so many of my colleagues
and friends out on the water.

We had beautiful
weather for our shredding event on Saturday at Ross Township’s
Department of Public Works. Thank you to the Ross DPW employees who
worked tirelessly alongside my and Rep. Emily Kinkead’s staff to
fill Shred America’s truck with destroyed documents!
Remember that we have our next free shredding event on Saturday,
September 7 at my Harrison Township office! Hope to see you there!
Support
West Penn Nurses!
Pennsylvania has the worst
nursing shortage in the country, with 20,000 unfilled nursing
positions. That’s why West Penn nurses have been negotiating for
a fair contract that invests in nurse retention and recruitment. They
know how important it is to keep our hospitals staffed so they can
work safely and meet the needs of their patients every single day. And
we know that an investment in nurses is an investment in ALL of
us.
Join me in standing up for our West Penn Nurses the same
way that they stand up for their patients at Stand
With West Penn Nurses! (everyaction.com).
Legislative Update
Energy Savings Equal Utility
Savings
A new
report released this week by PIRG and Penn Environment showed that
a typical household in Pennsylvania stands to save an average of $128
annually on their utility bills over the next two decades, thanks to
newly updated national appliance efficiency standards!
I’ve partnered with Rep. Jennifer O’Mara and Rep. Tom
Mehaffie to introduce legislation here in Pennsylvania that would help
our households and businesses save even more on their utility bills by
improving state appliance efficiency standards. Our bill would cover
appliances that don't already have federal standards and help
Pennsylvanians experience even more benefits.
HB1615 passed
the state house earlier this year and is awaiting a vote in the state
senate. We are asking the Senate to take this legislation up before
the end of the year so Pennsylvanians can experience even more utility
bill savings, cleaner air, and less pollution!
