labor day

Dear Friend,

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

We are committed to putting working families first by continuing to build our economy and lower costs for working Michiganders so they can get more money back in their pockets. Since taking office, we passed the Working Families Tax Credit, restored workers' rights, reinstated prevailing wage for all state projects, and announced more than 40,000 good-paying auto jobs.

We’re also focused on bringing manufacturing and supply chains back home to Michigan from overseas to grow our economy and drive investment into cities and towns too often left out or left behind. We’ve worked together to uplift our labor force and ensure everyone has the opportunities, skills, and support they need to ‘make it’ in Michigan.

*This Labor Day, let’s celebrate our progress and stay committed to the work still ahead of us. **Let's also celebrate every worker across our state whose hard work **is moving Michigan forward. Thank you for all that you do.*

Together, we will continue to create good-paying jobs, champion workers' rights, and build a brighter future for Michigan.

Sincerely,

Gretchen Whitmer

Governor

*Supporting Michigan Labor *

All Michigan workers deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

That’s why we have taken big steps to create tens of thousands of good-paying union jobs and protect workers' pay, benefits, and retirement in Michigan.

*In 2023, we expanded workers' rights by repealing Right to Work, ensuring workers everywhere can negotiate together for better pay, benefits, and safer conditions.* We were the first state to do so in decades! We also reinstated prevailing wage, so the folks working on state projects, like building our roads and replacing our pipes, get paid fairly.

When we deliver for Michigan workers, we grow Michigan’s middle class, build thriving communities, and ensure a strong foundation for our state’s future.

*Creating Jobs and Investing in our Workforce*

*Thanks to Michigan's strong workforce, Michigan is on the move.*

Our economy is growing, unemployment is low, and small business growth is high.

With our economic development toolkit, we brought home thousands of advanced manufacturing jobs and supply chains of electric vehicles, batteries, and semiconductor chips.

clean energy jobs

*Michigan is becoming a leader in clean energy manufacturing.* When I took office in 2019, there were 2 operational battery factories in America. Now, there are 30 under construction or up and running nationwide, including 6 in Michigan alone. We also have the highest concentration of engineers in the nation and a large skilled trades workforce that ranks in the top ten nationally.

With help from our partners in the Biden-Harris administration, we’re building up infrastructure and investing in forging the future of clean energy. Michigan’s construction jobs are at a 22-year high [ [link removed] ]. We passed a 100% clean energy standard with the strongest labor standards in the nation to make more American energy by American workers.

*We are continuing our momentum of growth by investing in Michigan’s workforce.* We are delivering two years of tuition-free, in-district community college for Michigan high school graduates and continuing programs like Michigan Reconnect [ [link removed] ] and the Michigan Achievement Scholarship [ [link removed] ] to provide tuition-free pathways to in-demand, good-paying jobs in our state.

*Michigan Statewide Workforce Plan*

In March [ [link removed] ], I released the Michigan Statewide Workforce Plan [ [link removed] ]. The plan, unanimously approved by the Michigan Workforce Development Board [ [link removed] ], marks the first time the State of Michigan has laid out a formal vision to create jobs, support workers, and boost employers. It is yet another example of how Michigan is leading the way in workforce development.

The Workforce Plan lays out a comprehensive roadmap of strategies and actions necessary to build on our success and ensure every Michigander has the skills, opportunities, and support they need to make it in Michigan.

We are expanding opportunities for our workforce through improved programs at community colleges, training centers, and universities to help train 5,000 new infrastructure workers and ensure that Michigan workers excel in fields like civil engineering to construction management.

Michigan serves more workforce participants than any other state in the Midwest. Michigan’s workforce system is:

* #1 in credential attainment for adults
* #2 in helping adults get employed and
* #6 in the nation for registered apprenticeships
