Friends –
Six years ago, when I first ran for office, it seemed like an impossible task. At the age of 32, I was running for a seat a Democrat hadn’t won in 60 years—facing a popular incumbent. I had never run for office before, and folks like me don’t tend to run and win statewide office.
Growing up in rural Colorado, my family experienced tough times. We were on and off food stamps and in and out of food banks. I started working the summer after 7th grade, and was the first person in my family to attend a four-year college and then law school.
Despite some long odds, I became Colorado’s first elected Democratic Secretary of State since Eisenhower was President, one of the few women ever elected to statewide executive office, and the youngest Secretary of State in the nation. I have the privilege of working for the people of Colorado and ensuring that every eligible voter is able to participate in our democracy and that our elections continue to set the gold standard for the nation.
But my journey is not just my own. It’s part of a broader movement of women who are stepping up to lead, challenging the status quo, and redefining what’s possible for our nation. This year, as we see Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for President, we are reminded of how far we’ve come—and how much further we can go.
Kamala’s nomination isn’t just a milestone; it’s a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of representation. It shows young girls across the country that their voices matter and that their leadership is not just welcomed but essential.
Women have always been at the forefront of change, whether in our communities, our states, or our nation. We bring unique perspectives and solutions that enrich our democracy. And now, with Kamala at the helm, we have the opportunity to continue this momentum, to break even more barriers, and to ensure that our government truly reflects the diverse voices of America.
As I reflect on my own journey, I am inspired by the progress we’ve made and the possibilities ahead. Together, we can build a future where leadership knows no bounds, where every voice is heard, and where our democracy works for everyone.
Thank you for being a part of this journey
