Friends,
Gregory Meeks has once again shown that he does not value working class people!
On Monday, dozens of lawmakers wrote a letter to leadership demanding that,
“any future COVID-19 pandemic legislation must include an Essential Workers Bill of Rights that includes necessary protections and benefits for the essential workers”
Fifty-seven lawmakers united in sending this clear message that workers rights are the top priority in any stimulus package going forward.
Some of the protections included in the Essential Workers Bill of Rights:
- Health and safety protections.
- Premium compensation for essential workers on the frontlines.
- Universal paid sick leave and family and medical leave.
- Protections for whistleblowers that expose unsafe workplace conditions.
- A crackdown on worker misclassification, ending the independent contractor loophole.
- Provide no-cost health care coverage for all.
- Ensuring essential workers have access to free, reliable, safe, healthy, and high quality child care.
These are common sense protections for workers that should have been made law, long before the COVID-19 crisis. My opponent and 22 year incumbent, Gregory Meeks, does not seem to agree.
While many of his colleagues on the Financial Services Committee, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley, signed this letter affirming the need for strengthened workers rights, Rep. Meeks did not.
Even as ‘May Day’, or International Workers' Day approaches and expanded worker protections becomes an obvious need, Rep. Meeks does not support an Essential Workers Bill of Rights. Meeks not supporting this commitment to the expansion of protections for working class people on the frontlines, is not a surprise.
Gregory Meeks is bought and paid for by corporations that oppose this Essential Workers Bill of Rights. Some of Rep. Meeks’ biggest donors are the Hospital ($31,100), Transportation ($48,250) and Insurance ($125,000) industries, all classified as ‘essential’. If his donors don’t support something, neither does he.
This is the exact type of corrupt, money driven politics that continues to harm the people of NY-5. We must defeat Gregory Meeks on election day, June 23rd, 2020.
As the Congressman representing the people of Southeast Queens and Nassau County, I will fight everyday for worker rights and protections. Workers rights are human rights!!
Do you share my outrage at Meeks’ disregard for frontline workers?
Do you believe we need an Essential Workers Bill of Rights and Bill of Rights for all workers?
Do you believe we need representation that makes decisions based upon the needs of their community, not the needs of their donors?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then help me defeat Congressman Gregory Meeks and fight for workers rights by contributing whatever you can!
