FRIDAY, 8/30/2024
After the victory over the Soviet Union in the Cold War, a major issue started to evolve in American geopolitical politics and international affairs. At that point, people were writing about the end of history because, seemingly, all our problems were solved. Coming out of the Cold War, our leaders concluded that we could have what they called a 'peace dividend' which reduced defense expenditures and spent it on domestic welfare programs.
And that was compounded by the ferocious budget cuts during the Obama Administration. So, over a period of 30 years, we have significantly under-invested in defense. The result has been a tenuous military. We can fix that if we’ve got political leaders who understand what the problem is, but there’s no doubt that we are stretched thin in a number of areas and services. We need to be doing more across a wider spectrum of weapons systems.

TAKE THE POLL: DO YOU THINK IRAN POSES A THREAT TO THE U.S.?
So, you might be thinking "That sounds fine but what does this mean for me?"
If you believe in balanced budgets, which I certainly do, this means we start by lowering domestic expenditures. Then we significantly increase our defense budget, nearly doubling, from what we’re spending now back to Reagan era levels, keeping Americans safe at home and abroad.
We can do it. Our leaders need to understand what the problem is and be willing to do something about it.
This is important to figure out sooner rather than later because the war between Iran and Israel is not going to go away tomorrow. The Iranians didn’t equip, train, finance and direct these terrorist proxies for the benefit of the terrorist proxies. Iran is bolstering up Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and others for the benefit of Iran.
I have a real problem with the way the Biden/Harris administration keeps saying they want to avoid a wider war. The Israelis, the Arab states, and the United States are in a wider war right now and have been since October 7th. From the Houthis in Yemen, to Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Shia militia groups in Syria, and Iran's own military forces -- all of these groups are determined to wipe Israel, and then America, off the map.
Until the White House acknowledges that the central problem is Iran, we’re going to have this issue flare up whenever the Iranians make the call.

What say you? Do you think Iran poses a significant threat to the U.S.? Do you think we are in fact a part of a wider war in the Middle East? Tell me here.
Driving the Week: This week, the Washington Post featured a new poll commissioned by the AARP and conducted by bipartisan polling pair of Republican firm Fabrizio Ward and Democratic firm Impact Research which found:
● The Senate race for Maryland's open Senate seat is a dead heat with former Governor Larry Hogan (R) tied with Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks (D) at 46%.
● John Bolton PAC is currently the leading outside group invested in the race with more than $1,000,000 spent on ads.

This week, I wrote for Independent Arabia outlining Iran’s failures and how the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh shows great vulnerability for Tehran.
Ayatollah Khamenei should increase his security protections. Whoever assassinated Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in a supposedly secure compound in Iran’s supposedly secure capital sent an unmistakable message to Khamenei, Iran’s citizens, its terrorist proxies, and the world at large: No one is safe in Iran.
Not the Supreme Leader, not Qassem Soleimani, and not the lowliest Basiji militiaman. This grim reality should lead all Iranians not lost in religious fanaticism or authoritarian ideology to reconsider their own future under the mullahs. Whether Israel (or whomever did the deed) used a bomb planted two months before detonating during Haniyeh’s visit, or fired a precision-guided weapon, the result was the same. Haniyeh is dead, and Iran stands humiliated.
