Since August 16, Communications Workers of America members at AT&T have united against bad faith bargaining. Over 17,000 southeast workers remain on the picket line for an unfair labor practice strike. Our network of organizations and community leaders have joined them in solidarity across Atlanta, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Charlotte.

The CEOs of some of the largest employers with the lowest-paid workers in the US are more “focused on their own personal short-term windfall” – spending significantly more money on stock buybacks than capital investments and contributions to employee retirement plans, according to a new report released by the Institute for Policy Studies. South Carolina JWJ Solidarity Hub joined the Union of Southern Service Workers last week in Orangeburg, SC for a Heat Stress Rally. The event gathered workers and climate experts to discuss extreme heat working conditions in the Palmetto state.
The workers’ demands include:
- Effective air conditioning and cooling equipment
- Consistent and frequent breaks with free water
- Compensation or accommodation for heat-related store closures
- A voice in developing a written heat-safety plan
- Training for all supervisors and workers on the signs and symptoms of heat stress and what to do in case of an emergency

CHIPS Communities United – a national coalition founded by Jobs With Justice, Jobs to Move America, Good Jobs for All, Sierra Club, and pioneered by CWA – was recently featured in The Verge!
The mission of CCU is to ensure all municipalities and employers receiving CHIPS and Science Act federal funding are creating strong union jobs, hiring local workers, and particularly opening the door for union apprenticeship programs to train women and communities of color.

Currently, the JWJ network is anchoring parts of this campaign in Arizona, Portland, and Colorado. “We also want to see workers empowered in the facilities, not just to know what they’re working with, but to have a voice in health and safety protocols, to have the right to stop production if things are dangerous,” says Judith Barish, coalition director for CHIPS Communities United. “And we want to know that workers won’t be retaliated against if they speak out.” Read the full article.
