** Polish prime minister admits abortion liberalisation unlikely to happen soon
------------------------------------------------------------
The Polish government headed by Donald Tusk since December 2023 tried and failed to introduce a new liberal abortion law last month. After the dramatic failure of the government’s abortion bill, Tusk has admitted that he cannot find consensus within his own coalition for how to change Poland’s abortion policy. “Until the next election, there will be no majority in this parliament for legal abortion, in the full sense of the word. We should not fool ourselves,” Tusk said on 23rd August 2024.
Just this week, the UN’s Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) denounced Poland’s pro-life abortion policy. Whilst CEDAW may feel comfortable singling out Poland in Europe for its pro-life policy, it would be far more reluctant to take a truly global perspective and take issue with the policies of approximately 120 countries that restrict abortion significantly.
The concession from Polish Prime Minister Tusk that a liberal abortion regime will not be introduced any time soon is significant for the pro-life cause.

Comedian Grace Campbell was a guest this week on Oliver Callan's morning show on RTÉ radio. The issue of abortion came up after Callan raised the piece she wrote in the Guardian in June about her recent abortion and the grief and sadness she felt afterwards.
