Today is the first day of classes -- such a big day for teachers, students and families....
And I’m not there.
It feels surreal to even type that! This is the first time in three decades that my students, colleagues, and admins are starting the year without me.
It’s a bittersweet day for me – but this is where I belong. Thanks to thousands of people like you, I’m on a leave of absence so I can focus 100% of my energy on our work to help end gun violence in schools and communities.

I wish I didn’t have to do this, John. But we started Teachers Unify because educators’ voices were being drowned out in the fight for gun safety, and something had to change. And since we launched, I’ve seen firsthand just how much impact we really can have.
Just this year alone, we’ve advocated for new safety measures, expanded existing laws for the better, and even celebrated the creation of a White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
So I can’t stop now. And I can’t afford to take even a second away from this work. But I also can’t do it alone. I need your help to take full advantage of this leave of absence and the opportunities it opens up for our movement.
