John — you know me as an actor, an activist, and yes, the woman in leg warmers from those workout tapes. But there’s a story behind all that sweat, and it’s a story I’m proud to share.

Back in the early ’80s, I wasn’t just looking for a way to get fit or help others get fit — I was on a mission. My then-husband, Tom Hayden, and I had founded the California Campaign for Economic Democracy (C.E.D.), an organization committed to tackling the social, political, and economic issues that were threatening our communities. We were determined to make a real difference, but we needed funding to keep our work going strong.

I realized that the only other business I knew besides acting was exercise. So, I thought, why not combine my passion for fitness with my commitment to activism? And that’s how the Jane Fonda Workout was born. Those VHS tapes weren’t just about sculpting muscles — they were about fueling a movement.

And let me tell you, I never imagined those videos would take off the way they did. We’re talking millions of copies sold, and every penny of profit went straight to the C.E.D. to support our campaigns. Your mom’s leg lifts and lunges helped fund the fight against toxic chemical dumps in California, to push for protective environmental policies, and to support liberal candidates who were ready to take on the big issues.

Fast forward to today, and I’m still in the fight. At 86, I might not be cranking out any more workout tapes, but I am still working out and I am still fighting for change!

We’re up against powerful forces — the kind that don’t take a break — but just like those workout tapes, every bit of support adds up to something much bigger. We’re taking on the greedy fossil fuel giants together, and trust me, we can’t do it without you!
