Josh Green for Hawaii
Aloha,

On Saturday of last week, law enforcement officials collected over 500 firearms in the second successful gun buyback event held on Oahu under Governor Josh Green’s administration.

Officials collected assault rifles, semi-automatic rifles and handguns, revolvers, shotguns, ghost guns and Glock switches — which are used to convert Glock pistols to fully automatic firing — along with significant amounts of ammunition.

Each firearm was exchanged for a $100 Foodland gift card — and while there was no limit on the number of firearms that could be turned in, gift cards were limited to a maximum of three per person.

In an ongoing, collaborative effort to protect Hawaii residents from gun violence and keep communities safe, the Office of the Governor partnered with the Department of the Attorney General, the Honolulu Police Department, and Honolulu Emergency Services to host the community gun buyback event at the Aloha Stadium Lower Parking lot from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday.

“We have lost too many loved ones and endured far too much gun violence in our neighborhoods where we should be able to feel safe,” Governor Green said. “This second event and the whole gun buyback initiative is part of a larger effort to combat gun violence and promote safe neighborhoods across Hawaii. I am proud to be working with our law enforcement agencies to expand this program statewide.”

Working and non-working firearms were accepted during the event, which also offered free gun locks for anyone who didn’t wish to turn in a gun but still wanted to make their firearms safe.

This is an amnesty program — no identification was required, and no questions were asked about the person dropping off the gun(s).

Green administration officials are planning future gun buyback events with county law enforcement partners statewide, and we will continue to keep you updated.

Mahalo,

Team Green
