Indigenous Leaders to Convene at Global Summit about the Energy Transition

August 9, 2024 - The Indigenous Peoples Global Coordinating Committee, in partnership with Securing Indigenous Peoples Rights to a Green Economy (SIRGE) Coalition, is hosting the JUST TRANSITION: Indigenous Peoples’ Perspectives, Knowledge, and Lived Experiences, an international summit taking place from October 8 to 10, 2024, in Geneva, Switzerland.  Read more.

Christian Town Road: An Indigenous Intergenerational Look at Place on Martha’s Vineyard 

In the mid-1600s, my ancestor, Mittark, was the Sachem of Aquinnah, a village on the island of Nopee, known today as Martha's Vineyard. Mittark had two sons, Ompany and Keteanummin. I descend from Ompany, the eldest son, who had converted to the Christian faith. After the passing of Mittark, Keteanummin was selected by the people of Aquinnah as the next Sachem, as the people rejected Ompany for his conversion to Christianity. Read more.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games, hosted in France, promised to be a landmark event. They showcased diverse athletic talents worldwide and celebrated a century of Indigenous participation in the Games. Over 50 Indigenous athletes proudly represented their nations, marking a significant milestone in the history of the Olympics. This substantial increase from previous years highlights the growing recognition of Indigenous talent in sports. Read more. 

Reclaiming Culture Through the Power of Two-Spirit Voices

From campaigns for equal rights to impactful cultural landmarks, the 2SLGBTQ+ movement constitutes advocacy for parity, diversity, and the affirmation of unique identity. Two-Spirit individuals, who embody both masculine and feminine qualities within Indigenous cultures, often face adversity and marginalization from misconceptions and assumptions about gender rolesmisunderstandings of terminology, inadequate legal protections, lack of representation in media, and biases in healthcare settings.  Read more.

Miskitu Indigenous Leader Brooklyn Rivera Is Still Missing, Now for Over 10 Months

Nicaraguan Miskitu Indigenous leader Brooklyn Rivera has been disappeared under the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega for 10 months now and the lack of news coming out of the beleaguered country and lack of interest in Rivera's fate has distressed human rights workers. Read more.

Simon Kooper, a prominent Nama leader and freedom fighter, played a pivotal role in the resistance against colonial oppression in Namibia during the early 20th century. As a staunch advocate for the rights and dignity of the Nama people, Kooper's leadership was instrumental in mobilizing resistance against German colonial rule, which sought to exploit and subjugate his community.

Our Indigenous Youth Fellowship supports young Indigenous leaders between the ages of 18-28 who are working to transform their communities and create opportunities for the elevation, defense, and strengthening of their cultures and traditional knowledge practices while developing their leadership, organizational, and project management skills.
