Dear John,

I hope you are safe and well!

Since the start of the pandemic, OutRight has shifted our work to COVID-19 response, to identify how LGBTIQ people are faring and provide support to our global community at this time. I’m writing today to share some exciting updates about these efforts.

Research Report Coming Soon!

Over the last five weeks, we have been working on a rapid research project to document the impact of COVID-19 on LGBTIQ people globally. Our entire team has been working with OutRight's Sr. Research Advisor Amie Bishop to conduct almost 60 interviews with LGBTIQ people in all regions of the world.

The research report, titled “Vulnerability Amplified: The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on LGBTIQ People”, will be released by the end of next week - stay tuned!

You can learn about the findings in a special webinar ahead of the release:

Tuesday, May 5, 10pm ET (May 6, 10 am GMT+8)
Wednesday, May 6, 1pm ET / 7pm CET

The webinars will present the findings from OutRight’s COVID-19 Global Crisis research, highlighting the immediate and pressing issues LGBTIQ people face as a result of the pandemic. We will also share lessons learned from the first round of grants from OutRight’s COVID-19 Global LGBTIQ Emergency Response Fund – with over 1300 applications received there are many lessons about the urgent needs of our global community.

Speakers will include Executive Director Jessica Stern, Sr. Advisor for Global Advocacy Paul Jansen, Sr. Research Advisor Amie Bishop, and other OutRight program staff, along with partners we interviewed for our report.

Emergency Fund Gearing up for First Grants!

Within three weeks of opening for applications, OutRight received more than 1300 requests for funding. Our application period will close on April 30 and we will be announcing our first grants very soon. While we have raised more than USD $500,000 from foundations, individuals, and the private sector, we must raise significantly more funds to meet even a portion of the tremendous need in our community.

We knew as we embarked upon this project that during times of crisis, vulnerable communities become even more vulnerable. But it is painfully clear that the effects of COVID-19 and the ensuing government lock-downs are extremely severe for LGBITQ people. An immense number of people from our community are facing an acute shortage of the most basic needs - food, shelter, and medication, not to mention the amplified levels of domestic violence, psychological toll and barriers to accessing healthcare. OutRight will continue to fundraise for the Emergency Fund to ensure that a greater number of the proposals we have received can receive support.

#GivingTuesdayNow Approaches!

A whole new Giving Tuesday is right around the corner! Originally created in 2012, Giving Tuesday has become a crucial day of fundraising for non-profits and takes place in November or December each year.

Having witnessed the need that has arisen across the globe, #GivingTuesdayNow is taking place on May 5th. If you can, there’s no greater way for you to give during this time of uncertainty than this coming Tuesday.

In order for us to have as much impact as possible for all the LGBTIQ organizations that desperately need it, we ask you to stand in solidarity with us. By supporting the COVID-19 Global LGBTIQ Emergency Fund you will help so many lives – with just one donation.

If you can’t make a donation you can still help by passing this information along to your friends/family/colleagues. Imagine, one-hundred $50 donations amount to a $5,000 grant!
By combining our own strength and means, together we can get through these trying times and make sure no one in our community is left behind. Please stand with us on this day of generosity.

With best wishes to you and your loved ones,

Jessica Stern
OutRight Executive Director

P.S. You can double or even triple the impact of your gift through your employer’s matching grants program. Please consider asking your employer to match your generous contribution.
