Disinformation, Trust, and the Role of AI: Threats to Health & Democracy Register for our September 9 event in NYC.
Join us for The Daniel Callahan Annual Lecture, hosted by The Hastings Center at Rockefeller University’s beautiful campus in New York. Hastings Center President Vardit Ravitsky will moderate a discussion with experts Reed Tuckson and Timothy Caulfield on disinformation, trust, and the role of AI, focusing on current and future threats to health and democracy. With major advances in the study and availability of psychedelic-assisted therapy for some mental health conditions, many practitioners are asking if firsthand experience with psychedelics is important for being a well-trained, competent therapist. There’s not enough empirical data to know whether the benefits outweigh the risks, finds an article in the Hastings Center Report, which recommends more research. Read the article.

Is IVF in Legal Jeopardy? This election-year question involves deeply held values.
Heightened concern over access to in vitro fertilization--a major issue in the U.S. presidential campaign--has renewed questions about regulation of the IVF industry. For example, should prospective parents be allowed to select embryos based on the results of genetic tests? Different values can influence the answer, notes Hastings Center President Vardit Ravitsky in an interview with CQ Researcher. In countries where embryo testing and IVF are restricted, “more weight is given to societal concerns regarding these technologies enhancing eugenic attitudes and tendencies.” But in the U.S., where IVF isn’t regulated, “there is more weight given to parental autonomy and the concept of ‘privacy’ in matters of reproduction.” Read more. Hastings Center Welcomes New Board Members Leaders in addressing health equity, misinformation, and trust.
The Hastings Center is pleased that Rachel R. Hardeman, PhD, MPH, and Reed V. Tuckson, MD, FACP, have joined its board of directors.
Dr. Hardeman is the Blue Cross Endowed Professor of Health and Racial Equity and the founding director of the Center for Antiracism Research for Health Equity (CARHE) at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. She also serves as a member of the Advisory Committee to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This year, she was named one of the TIME100 most influential people in the world. Read more.
Dr. Tuckson is a co-convener of the Coalition for Trust in Health and Science, which is dedicated to bringing together the entire health-related ecosystem to address mistrust and misinformation. In addition, he continues to advance his work as a co-founder of the Black Coalition Against COVID, a multi-stakeholder and interdisciplinary effort to mitigate Covid in Washington, D.C., and nationally.
