I’ve been an actor all my life, but I’ve also had a lifelong love of science. I’ve been expressing that love for the last 25 years. I interviewed hundreds of scientists on my TV show Scientific American Frontiers, and during the last ten years, the Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University has trained 15,000 scientists to communicate the wonders of science to the rest of us.

That’s where I got to know my friend Nancy Goroff -- at Stony Brook. As a scientist herself, she helped guide our efforts with skill and compassion, two great traits that ought to go together more often.

And there’s more about Nancy that I admire. One of the most valuable habits of scientists is to make decisions based on evidence, not on hoping and guessing, or thinking your intuition must be right because it’s yours. We’re living at a time when our lives depend on clear thinking.

So, you can imagine my pleasure when I heard that Nancy was running for Congress in our district.

I’m writing you today about one way we can ensure scientists have a seat at the table this November.

Nancy is running for Congress in NY-01 against Rep. Lee Zeldin, who is anything but a champion of science. If we can communicate her message and background as a scientist with enough voters across Long Island, the data show that she will win. And that will put science and clear thinking in the mix as decisions are made that affect our lives.

Nancy is extraordinary, and If we elect her in November, she will be the first woman with a Ph.D. in science ever to serve in Congress. In this crisis we’re living through, we desperately need leaders like Nancy working effectively to find solutions, guided by facts and truth.
