The plan also wouldn’t require borrowers to make payments if they earn less than 225% of the federal poverty line — $32,800 a year for a single person. That kind of transformational change is clearly a nonstarter for Republicans, who curiously only support loan-forgiveness programs that benefit wealthy business owners, powerful corporations, and — wouldn't you know it — themselves. We can't be letting everyday Americans get a taste of that sweet wealth-generating nectar now, can we?
