** Tribal leaders urge Biden to create three new national monuments in California

A group of Tribal leaders and California lawmakers are jointly calling on President Joe Biden to create three new national monuments in California. ([link removed]) The proposed Sáttítla, Chuckwalla, and Kw’tsán national monuments would protect more than 1 million acres of sacred Tribal lands.
The Chuckwalla National Monument ([link removed]) would preserve over 620,000 acres of public lands in Riverside and Imperial counties, just south of Joshua Tree National Park. The Kw'tsán National Monument ([link removed]) would designate more than 390,000 acres of Tribal homelands in Imperial County. And the Sáttítla National Monument ([link removed]) would include more than 200,000 acres of land within the Shasta-Trinity, Klamath, and Modoc national forests in northeastern California.
"These lands are more than just our history — they are the heart of our identity and the future of our people,” said ([link removed]) Yatch Bamford, chair of the Pit River Tribe, who are calling for the designation of the Sáttítla National Monument.
State lawmakers have already approved two resolutions ([link removed]) expressing support for the proposals that also encourage President Biden to establish the sites in order to help meet the national goal of protecting 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by the end of the decade.
