John,

It’s Kimberly here. We’re approaching the end of another month, and in a minute I am going to ask you to invest in this campaign. But first, we need to talk about our privilege.

For millions of Americans, adhering to shelter-in-place orders has become a chore. It’s boring. It’s inconvenient. It’s difficult to accept the fact that this may be our new normal for months to come. But, I want to take a minute to remember that not all Americans are lucky enough to be merely inconvenienced by COVID-19.

The truth is, millions more Americans deal with the existential crisis of food insecurity, lack of healthcare, lack of job security and a lack of disposable income that allows them to do more than live paycheck to paycheck every single day, even before COVID. For them, COVID-19 is another weight they must carry -- often as unpaid and unprotected ‘essential’ workers -- while trying to figure out how to put food on their families’ tables.

I bring this up because it brings me back to why I am waging this fight against one of the most entrenched incumbents in Washington, D.C. I’ve spent my life being a voice for the voiceless and standing up for those who need someone by their side.

I wish I could help more. I wish I were Senator now so that I could introduce legislation that would benefit working-class Iowans, not corporations and Big Industry. I think times of crises are when leaders have the choice to step up or to carry on with business as usual, and, as I’ve said before, this is not business as usual.

Joni Ernst, however, continues to parrot our president’s rhetoric around the coronavirus while doing little to actually help hurting Iowans. For example, instead of fighting for a second round of stimulus checks, Ernst has taken up the GOP mantle of blaming China for our own country’s failing response to this global pandemic.

Just this weekend she tweeted, “If China hadn’t covered up #Covid19, the effects of this pandemic could have been lessened. We need to hold China accountable.”

I am not here to defend China. I do believe that the Chinese government may have delayed releasing pertinent information and maybe even underreported confirmed COVID cases, but right now, millions of Americans are suffering. We’re seeing Great Depression-level unemployment, more American deaths than the years-long war in Vietnam, and the best Joni Ernst can do is repeat party talking points and point fingers at China.

My heart breaks when I see this. Iowans need real representation in Congress, not party pawns. Ernst -- and the Iowans she claims to represent -- would be better served to focus on the lying and misinformation campaigns of our own government right now. Particularly this administration. It is her duty to act in the interests of the American people, not to sit idly by when the president of the United States suggests injecting disinfectant as a potential cure.

And that’s why I’m still here, John. Because I am as sick and tired as you are of politicians pretending to care. As I care for my family, as I watch my staff fall ill with COVID-19, as I think about what it means to be a truly representative US Senator from Iowa, I know we all deserve better.

Will you pitch in today and help me hold Joni Ernst accountable to Iowans? ([link removed])
