Today, I’d like to share more about Frontier Institute and the project that earned them the 2023 Smart Bets Impact Award.

Frontier Institute is an Atlas Network partner organization in Helena, Montana and one of our 2023 Smart Bets. In 2022, they took up the challenge of reforming their state government to make Montana a more affordable place to live.

They named their effort the Big Sky, Big Opportunity project.

The goal was to slash the bureaucracy governing land use and housing construction, and to do so in part by amending the state constitution.

Their reforms sought to loosen zoning rules, enable landowners to build more on their property, and speed up the permitting process to build new homes.

Frontier Institute’s plan received bipartisan legislative support and a strong endorsement from Gov. Greg Gianforte.

Frontier Institute’s market-based approach to affordable housing was a success, and garnered attention across the U.S. and even internationally.

The Big Sky, Big Opportunity project also scored policy wins in healthcare and education reform.

Big Sky, Big Opportunity stood out among the work of our 2023 Smart Bets participants, and that’s why Frontier Institute won the Impact Award and its $25,000 prize.

This fall, Atlas Network will announce the Smart Bets Impact Award winner for last year’s class at Liberty Forum & Freedom Dinner in New York City.
