Speaker Nancy Pelosi just announced House Democrats will push to make sure nationwide vote-by-mail is included in the next coronavirus relief package.

Pelosi said making sure Americans can vote by mail is important to protecting the “life of our democracy” -- and she is absolutely right.

You did this! Over 250,000 progressives nationwide, including 33,418 DFA members, called on Congress to make this happen in the next bill and Speaker Pelosi is working to make it happen.

But we can’t let up the pressure now. Republicans are going to do everything they can to strip it from the Senate version of the bill. That means, Democrats in Congress, both Senate and House, need to make clear any bill that doesn’t protect Americans and their right to vote with mandatory access to vote by mail nationwide is a dealbreaker.

Without this crucial reform, Americans across the country could be forced to risk their health in order to exercise their constitutional right to vote. Democrats can’t let that happen.

We’ve already seen what an unsafe vote-in-person election looks like in Wisconsin earlier this month, when the Republican state legislature blocked vote-by-mail and voters were forced to stand in long lines at overcrowded polling locations to make their voices heard.

We can’t let that happen again. We can’t allow vote-by-mail to be left on the cutting room floor of the next coronavirus relief package.

DFA members have already shown the power of our collective action by getting to this step. Now with the support of DFA members nationwide, we’re going to keep pushing until it becomes law.
