Hi,

The Supreme Court's decision on presidential criminal immunity is so
radical that, in the words of Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Donald Trump could
have ordered "the Navy's Seal Team 6 to assassinate a political rival" and
remained "insulated from criminal prosecution."^1

Take a bribe. Stage a coup. Under this ruling, the president could do any
of those things and remain immune from prosecution.

No president should be trusted with that kind of power — and we're
fighting back.

New legislation just introduced in the U.S. Senate would reaffirm what
should have been unquestioned all along: that presidents and vice
presidents do not have legal immunity for actions that violate federal
criminal law.^2

Congress should pass this bill immediately, and we're mobilizing
grassroots support to demand they do just that.

The Supreme Court's ruling gives the president absolute immunity for any
crimes committed as part of his "official acts."^3

The ruling then provides such a sweepingly broad definition of "official
acts" that nearly anything the president does could be construed as
immune. As if that's not bad enough, the Supreme Court also ruled that
criminal evidence involving official acts is inadmissible in court.^4

As Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in her dissent, the decision "makes a
mockery of the principle, foundational to our Constitution and system of
Government, that no man is above the law."^5

Let's be clear: This is not just about holding Donald Trump's criminal
indictments. Demand Progress Action is a nonpartisan organization, and we
don't think any president should be above the law, regardless of who it is
or what party they belong to.

The No Kings Act would undo the Supreme Court's radical and dangerous
decision by firmly stating that no president or vice president, former or
sitting, is entitled to immunity from criminal prosecution for actions
that violate the criminal laws of the United States. Further, the bill
clarifies that Congress, not the Supreme Court, determines to whom federal
criminal laws may be applied.^6

For the sake of our Democracy, Congress must pass this legislation
immediately.
