Statement from Representative Adriano Espaillat on the Distribution of $25 Million to Support Asylum Seekers in New York City

This Congress, Espaillat Has Led the Charge to Allocate Federal Funding Support to Assist Migrant Families in New York City and in Major Cities throughout the Nation

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), announced an additional disbursement of $25 million in emergency funding from the Shelter and Services Program (SSP) and the Emergency Food and Shelter Program – Humanitarian Awards (EFSP-H) to New York City. This money will support local government and nonprofit entities in the City that are working to provide humanitarian relief to newly-arrived asylum seekers and immigrant families.

“Today's announcement from FEMA and CBP to allocate $25 million to New York to support newly arrived asylum seekers highlights our national ongoing efforts to support local communities providing critical services for these families,” said Rep. Espaillat. “This emergency funding strengthens our efforts to provide these vital services for migrant families upon their arrival, and furthers our commitment to working together with the Biden-Harris Administration to ensure all families are supported when they need our assistance the most.”

Earlier this Congress, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) led a letter to FEMA on behalf of the New York delegation which urged FEMA to swiftly provide New York City with a sizeable portion of SSP and EFSP-H funding to assist asylum seekers and new arrivals to the city. Today's announcement builds on Rep. Espaillat's ongoing efforts to champion support of newly arrived migrant families to New York City and major metropolitan regions around the nation.
