Earlier this month, voters in Wisconsin turned out at historic levels to make their voices heard in the state’s first election with its new, fair legislative maps.
It’s clear: When maps become more fair, voters are more motivated to engage in the electoral process.
But none of this happened overnight — it’s the result of playing the long game , in election after election, to get these maps in place. We know that with our battle-tested strategy and team, we can protect the fair maps we have achieved, fight the ongoing attempts to gerrymander, and be ready for the redistricting fights ahead.

Back in 2018, Republicans controlled all levers of power in the state. They had gerrymandered themselves into virtually unbreakable legislative majorities. But the NDRC refused to let the status quo stand. We got to work investing in state supreme court and gubernatorial races to chip away at their stranglehold on power and ensure fairness.
Fast forward to today, Wisconsin — a 50-50 state — now has a fair maps champion in Gov. Tony Evers, a pro-democracy majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and state legislative maps that allow both parties to compete.
And in last month’s primaries, new, fairer districts in Winnebago, Outagamie, La Crosse, Iowa, Sheboygan, and Racine counties saw votes cast increase by well over 50 percent compared to 2022.
The path to success in Wisconsin was by no means easy — but it underscores the fact that even the toughest states aren’t unreachable in the fight for fairness.
