As we continue to respond to COVID 19, the County has taken additional steps on homelessness and are working to finalize the budget. I will send more on both topics on Friday.

Today, I want to ask you to think about our schools, which are holding a caucus to elect two school board members. I hope you will request a ballot by the end of the day on May 7th online, or by US Mail for receipt by that date.

I am supporting Cristinia Diaz-Torres and David Priddy, and believe it very important that you request your ballot to vote in the Democratic Caucus for our shared commitment to equity and excellent public schools in Arlington. Our schools have always been among the best in Virginia; electing these two leaders will help them better serve all our students well.

Cristina is a teacher who works in education policy who will ask the difficult questions and do the hard work to help address the opportunity and achievement gaps that prevent us from meeting the needs of all students. She will help our school division move from very good to great.

I am confident she will be an excellent school board member because I worked with her closely on our campaign and I have seen her work ethic and educational ideals on the APS Budget Advisory Commission. Her experience is rooted in teaching in Las Vegas where her students needed high school math skills and came to a classroom that initially did not have enough desks. Her experience also includes work with school districts across the country to improve student outcomes with evidence-based systems and policies. Cristina also is rooted in Arlington with experience serving on the Joint Facilities Advisory Commission (JFAC) and has been endorsed by the Arlington Education Association.

David Priddy is dedicated, collaborative, and committed to equity, the three main qualities I look for in a School Board Member. He also has relevant experience serving Arlington Public Schools as a member of two critical committees, the Advisory Committee on Instruction and the Superintendent’s Committee on Equity and Excellence. He also currently serves as President of Thomas Jefferson Middle School’s PTA.

I’m proud to endorse David for the Arlington School Board. His ideas and commitment, along with his experience, will help him hit the ground running and serve our community well. He is a parent of two current APS students and an APS graduate himself; he knows the challenges facing our school system and how to make sure our schools serve all students well. Please join me in voting for David Priddy by requesting a ballot by mail before May 7^th and returning it before May 30^th:

As you make these two choices, I ask that you consider Cristina and David and reach out if you have questions. One of the five reasons I ran for the County Board was to make sure our schools have the resources to educate every child well. I am supporting Cristina and David because I believe they are the best two choices to help achieve that goal. They will know when to ask hard questions, make changes, build consensus, and govern to improve our schools.
