Summer 2024 updates 😎
[link removed]
Dear John,
As usual, summer is flying by. Temperatures continue to soar, students across the country are headed back to school, and some of us are already raking up a first round of fallen leaves. We hope you’re soaking up the last drops of what this season has to offer!
Here’s a quick peek at what’s been going on in our world recently. If you’d like to support these ongoing campaigns for climate and worker justice, please make a donation today ([link removed]) .
** Breach is growing!
------------------------------------------------------------
A heartfelt welcome to Breach’s new Oregon Statewide Energy Transition Organizer, Aya Cockram ([link removed]) ! We had the privilege of meeting some spectacular organizers from around the world through our hiring process for this role, and because of her direct experience managing building electrification and fossil fuel resistance campaigns, Aya stood out from the rest. She started earlier this month and is integrating smoothly onto our team and into this important work. With Aya’s guidance, we look forward to continued progress in the just transition away from fossil fuels toward a clean energy future.
** NW Natural is in hot water (again, and again, and again).
------------------------------------------------------------
Notably, NW Natural, the state’s largest fossil fuel company, was caught intentionally blending hydrogen into the gas system in Portland ([link removed]) without any public outreach or specific oversight by regulators. This was only about a month after they made headlines ([link removed]) for “once again” missing their own targets to offset carbon emissions with renewable natural gas. Most recently, they were called out by environmental regulators ([link removed]) for misleading customers about their climate credit program.
Join us in taking action against NW Natural now. ([link removed])
** Elon Musk’s xAI is coming to Memphis.
------------------------------------------------------------
Our partner in Tennessee, Memphis Community Against Pollution (MCAP) ([link removed]) , has launched a campaign against Elon Musk’s tech startup, xAI. xAI has been quietly building the world’s largest supercomputer in Southwest Memphis, which requires 150MW of energy (enough to power 100,000 homes!!) and 1 to 1.5 million gallons of water per day to run. For xAI to get the power it needs, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board has to authorize its request. MCAP is gathering signatures from community members ([link removed]) to ask the TVA Board to vote ‘No’ on the pending request from xAI.
** Greenpeace launches campaign in advance of SLAPP trial.
------------------------------------------------------------
Breach is a member of and manages the communications for the Protect the Protest ([link removed]) coalition. Another coalition member, Greenpeace, is facing a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) ([link removed]) : Energy Transfer, the Big Oil company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline, has sued the nonprofit organization for $300 million. The lawsuit could set dangerous new precedents that benefit corporations in going after protesters. On August 1, Greenpeace launched a campaign ([link removed]) to build awareness and support leading up to the February 2025 trial in the case.
** New Organize Your Organization! project coming soon.
------------------------------------------------------------
Earlier this year we launched Organize Your Organization! ([link removed]) to share our knowledge and experience with nonprofit union campaigns in order to build worker power in the nonprofit sector. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback about the utility of our free OYO handbook, a step-by-step guide to unionizing nonprofit workplaces (download your copy here ([link removed]) !). Next month we will share a new component of this project that will allow us to go deeper on the content outlined in the handbook. Make sure you have downloaded your copy of the handbook ([link removed]) so that your email is on our announcement list.
Thank you so much for being a part of our Breach world. We look forward to what lies ahead as we transition toward the end of the year, and will keep you informed. Our ability to support grassroots climate and labor movement campaigns is only possible because of the generous donations of our followers. Please consider giving today ([link removed]) .
In solidarity,
The Breach Team
