Announcing A is For's Abortion Book Club Meeting #2
The A is For Abortion Book Club (ABC) is our newest, stigma-busting program. Join us for a series of virtual meet-ups to discuss books about reproductive justice and abortion access.
This is a FREE program and all meetings will be virtual.
On Thursday, October 24th at 7PM ET we will be meeting to discuss Dorothy Robert's book, Killing the Black Body.
In 1997, this groundbreaking book made a powerful entrance into the national conversation on race. In a media landscape dominated by racially biased images of welfare queens and crack babies, Killing the Black Body exposed America’s systemic abuse of Black women’s bodies. From slave masters’ economic stake in bonded women’s fertility to government programs that coerced thousands of poor Black women into being sterilized as late as the 1970s, these abuses pointed to the degradation of Black motherhood—and the exclusion of Black women’s reproductive needs in mainstream feminist and civil rights agendas.
The book club will be moderated by Trae Banuelos-Rovaris (she/they). Trae is a social researcher, facilitator, and artist passionate about creativity, reproductive justice, and liberation from capitalism. Born and raised in the Midwest but now living in Harlem, Trae works at Broadway for Arts Education. They also serve as the Vice President of Abortion Conversation Projects and volunteer with the Audre Lorde Project. Connect with her and read more about their work at traciabanuelos.com.
