After delaying the primary due to coronavirus concerns, Ohio had their state legislative primary election yesterday (almost entirely vote-by-mail for the first time!). This means candidates in ten of our target districts just entered the general election.

The November elections may feel really far away right now. But here’s why our work in Ohio matters now: the ultimate winners of these state legislative elections will draw the Ohio congressional district maps, which will affect who gets elected to Congress and ultimately, who controls the House. If we want fair maps that count everyone’s vote equally, we need to stop GOP gerrymandering—by helping Democrats win the state legislature in November.

So we’re sending voter turnout letters make sure likely-Democratic voters in Super States like Ohio are ready to vote in November. You can make a huge impact from wherever you are—start writing letters today.

With the pandemic (rightfully) dominating our newsfeeds, it’s hard for state legislative candidates to get the airtime and support they need ahead of the critical 2020 elections. Meet two of our candidates running to flip competitive seats:

Amy Cox – Ohio House District 43 (images) Amy is a public school running to represent the suburban and rural communities surrounding Dayton. She is a fierce advocate for public education funding, for higher wages for workers and organized labor, and for protecting Medicaid expansion in Ohio. Sara Bitter – Ohio House District 27 (images) Sara is running to represent the eastern suburbs of Cincinnati. She’s running to create a Disability, Mental Health and Addiction Caucus in the Ohio legislature to represent those in her district, and across the state of Ohio, who need a stronger voice in the legislature.

These candidates are in the race to help make sure Ohio has fair congressional maps for the next decade. Right now, Ohio is home to some of the worst partisan gerrymandering—Republicans hold a majority in both state houses, and they’ve used that power to draw unfair district maps that dilute Democratic votes so they maintain control. In '18, the GOP won only 51% of the vote but the districts are so uneven that they still hold 62% of the seats.

Together, we can make sure all voices are heard—Democrats need to win just two net seats to break the Republican supermajority in the state House and lay the groundwork to flip the state Senate.
