| Wednesday, April 29 Round Up: Coalition letter to Speaker Pelosi, your chance to sign on, upcoming trainings, & more. | | | Taking Action During COVID-19 | | | | | NPH and All Home were proud to organize more than 100 of the Bay Area and state’s leading non-profit and community organizations to sign and send a letter to Speaker Pelosi and the California Congressional delegation that directs lawmakers to take immediate action on housing policy to directly address the COVID-19 environment in California and nation-wide. The letter identified that the global pandemic requires a two-fold response to both address the public health crisis now as well as the emerging economic crisis ahead. Read the full letter here. | | | | Help us collect additional signatures and comments to Speaker Pelosi's office and our California Delegation. The COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated our nation’s existing housing crisis, even while revealing how critical safe, stable housing is for our communities’ health. Add your signature and personal comments to the letter to urge Speaker Pelosi to: - Sweeping rental/debt relief for all households which are no longer able to pay their rents or mortgages as a result of COVID-19.
- The designation of affordable housing as essential infrastructure in any future Infrastructure Stimulus package.
| | | | | | Important win! The BART Board of Directors voted to amend its Transit-Oriented Development Policy to support the production of affordable housing. Last week BART passed a land discount policy on a 5-4 vote. With our members and partners, NPH led an advocacy strategy to win this critical victory. This policy was born out of NPH's sponsored legislation in 2018. BART will be discounting land up to 60% of its value for affordable projects with the deepest affordability. To learn more about BART's TOD Policy implementation please visit BART's website and contact Policy Manager Rodney Nickens to learn more about how you can get involved. | | | | | |
Repurposing unused public land has the potential to promote affordable housing development throughout the state. Last year, NPH was proud to be a co-sponsor of AB 1486 (Ting, 2019). This law aims to connect developers who are interested in building more affordable homes to surplus public land that is both available and suitable for housing development. The California Department of Housing and Community Development now has a website that details all surplus land opportunities for affordable housing development throughout the state and we encourage you to visit it to learn more about local surplus land opportunities. If you are an affordable housing developer, notify HCD of your interest in receiving notices about surplus local public land. | | | | |
