Special counsel files new indictment in Trump’s Jan. 6 case

  • Special counsel Jack Smith filed a new superseding indictment against former President Donald Trump in his Washington, D.C. election subversion case. The new indictment is in response to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling regarding presidential immunity.


Pennsylvania court delivers win to absentee voters in the state

  • A Pennsylvania court rejected a GOP lawsuit that tried to limit sites where voters can return their absentee ballots in the swing state, including drop boxes. The lawmakers behind the lawsuit were involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 election.


  • Mail-in and absentee voting continues to be a hotly contested issue in Pennsylvania in the lead-up to the November election. Democracy Docket is currently tracking seven active lawsuits pertaining to mail-in voting.


Louisiana governor pushes GOP’s noncitizen voting narrative

  • Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R) signed an executive order to ensure that noncitizens aren't placed on the state’s voter rolls, even though it is already illegal for noncitizens to register or vote and there’s no evidence of widespread noncitizen voting.

  • Landry pushing a fear of noncitizen voting is not new. Last month, he signed bills into law requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote and establishing procedures to remove people from voter registration lists.


Montana and Utah place measures on the November ballot

  • Initiatives to reform Montana's election processes and allow Utah's lawmakers to overturn voter-approved measures will be on the ballot in November.
