Harris Commits to Worst of Biden Healthcare Policies

Democrats flocked to Chicago this week to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris for president. They also handed her a policy platform stuffed with all things progressive, from a global minimum tax on corporations to Medicaid expansion.
One proposal Harris has explicitly backed would enshrine President Joe Biden’s enhanced Obamacare subsidies, which are slated to expire in 2025. “Republicans want to let those credits expire, increasing premiums,” the Democratic platform asserts. “Democrats will fight to make them permanent.”

Drug Price Controls Underperform, Unworkable

Medicare this month announced the end of its first round of “negotiations” over the prices of 10 prescription drugs covered under the Part D benefit as authorized by the Inflation Reduction Act. The results the Biden administration has delivered are a lot less dramatic than they’re letting on.
According to the White House, the program will save the federal government an estimated $6 billion in 2026, the first year the new prices will be in effect, while reducing costs for seniors by $1.5 billion.
Those figures might seem impressive. But they are almost certainly inflated. In fact, it’s remarkable how little immediate effect on drug prices the program will deliver.

Tort Abuses Threat to Innovation and Product Availability

The ill effects from abusive lawsuits are well documented and include higher costs for consumers, reduced economic output, and diminished innovation. The adverse impacts on innovation are particularly troubling.
Not only is continued invention necessary for expanding our prosperity, but it is also key for mitigating problems such as global climate change or finding new technologies and treatments for troubling health conditions.
