A newsletter from The Hechinger Report
Hi everyone,
Have you heard the one about how college can be … expensive? It isn't just tuition though ([link removed]) , as Hechinger senior higher education reporter Jon Marcus reports. In fact, as much as families may plan for college spending, tuition prices have actually been shrinking, a little, over the last few years when adjusted for inflation. But the price of room and board rose more than 14 percent from 2010 to 2020, according to the College Board. Some colleges, Jon reports, are trying to address the issue.
In that same spirit of innovation perhaps, a group of nine rural school districts in Colorado banded together ([link removed]) to grow career and college pathways for their students, Hechinger’s Neal Morton reports. This group of nine also set up a nonprofit that conducts job market analysis and surveys teenagers about their interests, giving academic counselors the kind of data they need to advise students about new CTE and college-level classes in high-wage positions in the building trades, hospitality and tourism, health sciences, education and the environment. The big unknown: Can they keep it going when pandemic money runs out?
And in case you missed it, we want your input on this newsletter. We just need a few minutes of your time to answer this survey ([link removed]) to help ensure the Weekly Update remains relevant and interesting to you.
