Should the EPA protect us from microplastic pollution?

Friend, we need to take action on a growing threat to our health and environment: microplastics.

Microplastics are everywhere. These tiny plastic particles have infiltrated every corner of our lives – our food, our water and even our bodies. Exposure to microplastics is now unavoidable. Items we use daily, including water bottles, cutting boards and clothing, continuously shed microplastics into our surroundings. What’s worse, most plastics don’t break down in the environment; they simply break into smaller and smaller pieces.

Not only can microplastics wreak havoc on our environment, they can also pose serious health risks. Prolonged exposure can lead to severe respiratory, circulatory and digestive issues. The chemicals absorbed by microplastics and then released into our bodies can disrupt our endocrine and reproductive systems and increase our risk of cancer.

Despite these alarming findings, the EPA is doing little to regulate microplastics.
