The national debt going up by $4 trillion this year has been in the news, but what does that mean?

There is no point of reference for a trillion dollars. I guess it's a big number, but I don't know of anyone I have ever run into that has a firm grasp of how big a number it really is...

So think of this as a way of getting your arms around it...

Equate trillions to the 60 seconds that make up a minute:

1000 seconds would equal 17 minutes.

1 million seconds would equal 12 days

1 billion seconds would equal 32 years.

..and...

1 trillion seconds would equal 32,000 years.....

Billion to trillion represents an exponential change and increase....and people don't realize it.

Think on that next time you see the addition of $4 trillion of federal debt this year.

Sincerely,
