Highlights from our week in Chicago!

PPI Hosted a Delegation of Members of Parliament and Labour Party Leaders from the United Kingdom

In continuation of our long-term efforts to bring together center-left leaders across the globe, PPI hosted a delegation from the United Kingdom's Labour Party for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The delegation attended to share their success strategies from their resounding election win in July, discuss campaign tactics with leading Democrats, and to build new relationships across the pond. Leading members of the delegation particapted in panel discussions at our “Winning the Working Class” events with Axios. The overwhelming message they shared was the importance of directly appealing to the concerns of working class voters and speaking to the issues that have been traditionally ignored by the far-left wings of the Democratic and Labour parties.

Winning the Working Class, Part 1 (August 19, 2024)

PPI partnered with Axios to host an event centered around how both the UK Labour Party and Democratic Party are both grappling with earning the working class vote. The discussions gathered insights from an array of global and domestic political insiders around what needs to be done to reach these voters to swing the voter pendulum for this decisive bloc. Speakers included Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-WA), Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL), and Labour MPs Lucy Rigby and Mike Tapp.

Winning the Working Class, Part 2 (August 20, 2024)

Part 2 of the event included a panel featuring PPI President Will Marshall, alongside David Evans, General Secretary for the Labour Party, and Jonathan Ashworth, Chief Executive of Labour Together and former MP.

Further speakers included Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) and David Plouffe, Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign manager who now serves as a senior advisor to the Kamala Harris campaign.

PPI Policy Forum (August 20, 2024)

PPI organized and hosted an afternoon of programming centered around our Campaign for Working America, recently launched by former Rep. Tim Ryan, which is developing a new Blueprint of policy ideas oriented around the economic aspirations and moral concerns of working families. Throughout numerous panels and fireside chats throughout the day, we discussed a policy framework to address what we see as the Democratic Party’s overriding political imperative: Regaining the allegiance of working-class Americans.

Speakers included: Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO), Governor Jared Polis (D-CO), Rep. Nikki Budzinski (D-IL), Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), State Rep. and State Senator-Elect Dora Drake (D-WI), and many more.

Reception and DNC Watch Party (August 20, 2024)

To cap off our DNC festivities, we hosted a reception and convention watch party following our policy forum. We were joined for a fun evening of food and drink by Rep. Scott Peters (D-CA), and special guests from across the pond, including including UK Labour General Secretary David Evans, Lucy Rigby MP, Mike Tapp MP, and Siobhan McDonagh, MP. After an exciting victory for the UK Labour Party in July, and with the renewed enthusiasm among Democrats here in the US, there was no better time for UK Labour and pragmatic Democrats to be celebrating together!
