After 3+ years and 8 elections –1,125 days to be exact – of unconstitutional voter suppression, Kansas civic groups can finally register voters again without the threat of a felony conviction! Back in 2021, the Kansas Legislature passed a bundle of election laws (even overriding the governor’s veto!), one of which criminalized voter registration because it could give “the appearance of being an election official.”
Since then, Loud Light and in-state partners have been fighting to get this law either rewritten or thrown out. Finally, on July 29, the District Court of Kansas granted a temporary injunction blocking that law, allowing Loud Light and other groups to get back to work! Before the passage of this law, Loud Light had registered nearly 10,000 Kansans in the 2020 elections. Now, they are “fired up and ready to register thousands of young Kansans to vote again” (Davis Hammet, Loud Light President).

The end of August means voter registration deadlines are right around the corner! It’s time to make sure that you’re registered at your current address and ready to make your voice heard in upcoming elections. With some states even erroneously purging people from their voter rolls, taking a few moments to verify your registration status and your details can make all the difference.
