Young refugee and unaccompanied children, many who face discrimination and language barriers, enter school in America without even the basics of their peers—a computer, internet access, and school supplies like backpacks, pencils and notebooks. A generous one-time gift could make a difference for a young, aspiring refugee child beginning his first school year in their new community.

** Op-ed: The U.S. Must Do Right By Its Afghan Allies
------------------------------------------------------------

“Nearly three years ago, Americans watched in horror as the Taliban took over Afghanistan.

Tens of thousands of Afghans who had served alongside the United States during the war were evacuated to safety. Thousands more were left behind in Afghanistan under the Taliban’s repressive return to power.

The news cycle in the United States moved on. The fall of Kabul became a moment in U.S. foreign policy history, one that bubbles to the surface during the occasional Congressional hearing.

But, for many, the trauma of August 2021 is an ever-present, ongoing reality—one that hardens with another passing anniversary.”

** On the Frontlines: The Uganda Refugee Response and Refugee-Led Organizations
------------------------------------------------------------

With 1.6 million refugees residing in its territory, the Republic of Uganda is Africa’s largest refugee-hosting country.

Refugee-led organizations have sprouted across the country. Ranging from large, professional networks to handfuls of volunteers, these groups channel their talent and past trauma into providing services, promoting livelihoods, and giving other essential support to their neighbors. But these groups struggle to get consistent funding. They face obstacles getting formally registered. They are sidelined in processes that affect their lives.

This report examines the state of the Uganda refugee response and the role of refugee-led organizations (RLOs) in it.
