Route 51 routinely racks up fatalities. Avishek Acharya, a Bhutanese-Nepali refugee living and working in Pittsburgh, dreams of walking a future Route 51 with consistent sidewalks and better-situated bus stops.
Since 2018, fatal overdoses have tripled among Allegheny County’s Black residents, while overdoses among white residents have plateaued. The Department of Human Services is working to make treatment more accessible.
