Ballot Access Fight Reaches WI Supreme Court! Wisconsin Supreme Court Keeps Green Party Candidate on Presidential Ballot The Supreme Court of Wisconsin denied a petition by a DNC staffer to remove Green Party Candidate Jill Stein from the ballot. WILL represented two Wisconsin voters in the case, a member of the Green Party and a libertarian. WILL President and General Counsel, Rick Esenberg, stated, “Granting this petition would have disenfranchised the votes of tens of thousands of Wisconsinites, and ultimately undermined ballot access by future third-party candidates. This ruling from the Court is a win for Wisconsin elections and the voters who place their faith and trust in the democratic process.” Full Statement AWARD WINNING: WILL Secures Two Awards at SPN Conference WILL was honored to announce that we have won two awards at the 2024 Annual State Policy Network Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. These awards were created to celebrate organizations like ours that “pioneer new solutions and avenues toward lasting social change, personal freedom, and opportunity at the state and local levels.” WILL was selected to win a Bob Williams Award for Biggest State Based Litigation Win and a Communications Excellence Award. Press Release NEW from WILL Policy: School Choice is a Life Preserver Recently, the Wisconsin Policy Forum released a comprehensive overview of the education landscape in Milwaukee. The report is likely eye-opening for many—and shows just how far behind Milwaukee’s students are in comparison to the rest of the state and the nation. But, much of the media coverage of this report seems to focus on the notion that education reform has failed in the city. For instance, the Journal Sentinel headline calls back to the birth of the private school choice program in Milwaukee thirty years ago as a starting point for this failure. But the reality is far more nuanced, and Milwaukee’s choice and charter schools ought to get credit for doing a better job on average. Read the full op-ed here. WILL Keeps State Bar Lawsuit Moving Forward! A federal judge has allowed a case against the Wisconsin State Bar (the Bar) to proceed, following a lawsuit from us. WILL asserts that mandatory membership in the Bar is unconstitutional. Under state law, attorneys are mandated to join the Bar and pay it hundreds of dollars in dues each year to practice in Wisconsin. The Bar then uses the dues to fund controversial political activities—thereby violating its members’ freedom of association and freedom of speech. A victory in this case would liberate thousands of attorneys from compelled membership, collectively saving attorneys statewide an estimated $5 million in annual dues. Learn More Tickets Going Fast!
