Over the past few weeks, we’ve been repeatedly reminded of the lengths to which educators go to serve their students. This crisis has put a spotlight on your dedication to the communities you serve, your commitment to doing right by your students and the incredible significance of the work you do each day.
To support you in this work, TT has been creating resources that we hope will be of use during the challenging transition to distance teaching and learning. Today we want to let you know about our newest article, “Rethinking Family Engagement During School Closures.”
In it, Dr. Rachael Mahmood, a fifth-grade teacher who wrote her dissertation on family engagement, encourages fellow educators to consider how expectations for students are related to assumptions about family involvement—and why you might need to rethink those assumptions. Dr. Mahmood outlines three common assumptions about family engagement, and she offers recommendations for ways educators can adjust policy, assignments and expectations to ensure that all students and their families are supported during this time.
