When emergencies like natural disasters or dangerous conflicts happen, access to safe water and crucial sanitation and hygiene facilities are often severely impacted. Each of these outcomes put children’s health at risk.
Today, nearly 3.4 billion people — almost half the world’s population — lack access to safe sanitation. Without access to safe water and sanitation like toilets, diseases spread rapidly and disproportionately affect children.
Ahead of World Water Week, we’re highlighting the importance of safe sanitation and UNICEF’s efforts to sustain access to it for children.

Safe sanitation can save lives.
Access to proper hygiene and toilets can make a world of difference for hundreds of children under the age of 5 who die every day due to easily preventable diarrheal diseases. Safe water and sanitation services, especially in schools, can prevent children from missing school, and strengthen especially young girls’ confidence and knowledge.
With your support, UNICEF is working to improve access to safe drinking water and basic toilets for children across the world.
Play our interactive game to better understand how hard it can be to find a toilet in places facing climate emergencies — and how UNICEF is responding to help children.
Thank you for always caring for children,
