MICHIGAN COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS "Promoting safe use and ownership of firearms through education, litigation, and legislation." MONDAY E'NEWS Election 2024: Shoot the Vote A recent analysis of voting records and gun ownership from Women for Gun Rights found that 370,619 gun owners in Michigan, an important swing state in the upcoming 2024 Presidential election, are not currently registered to vote. President Joe Biden surpassed former President Donald Trump by 154,188 votes in Michigan during the 2020 election, according to the Michigan Secretary of State. In 2022, had an additional 110,000 already registered Republicans not failed to vote, the Michigan House of Representatives and the Michigan Senate would have a pro-gun majority today. Katie Baney, Chairman of the Board & Executive Director of the U.S. Concealed Carry Association for Saving Lives Action Fund, wrote in an op-ed for the Daily Caller that "one sizable voter bloc that can and should significantly impact the elections is law-abiding gun owners" and that "the gap between Second Amendment advocates and detractors is growing wider by the day." Baney also further wrote that the Biden-Harris administration has called for "sweeping bans" on firearms that are the most common choices for home and self-defense. Encouraging responsible gun owners to participate in elections has been difficult in recent years due to a widespread belief that elections are being fraudulently manipulated. To help address this, the Shoot the Vote effort is urging gun owners who sat out the vote in 2020 and 2022 to make 2024 "too big to rig." Shoot the Vote is urging hunters, shooters, and everyday gun owners who are, as of yet, unregistered to vote to take time to register and vote to protect the Second Amendment. The Shoot the Vote website provides links that gun owners can use to register to vote and to get involved in efforts to organize for broad-based pro-2A victories. If anti-gun legislators expand on their current razor thin majority in the Michigan House of Representatives, new gun control legislation is likely to pass during the 2025-2026 legislative session. At a minimum, this could include magazine capacity restrictions, a ban on the sale of modern rifles, the elimination of local government preemption, an expansion of gun free zones, and the removal of liability protections for firearms manufacturers. The key to preventing this is the turnout of pro-gun voters. The bottom line, according to Shoot the Vote, is simple: “Your grandfather didn’t sleep in a foxhole in a far away land clutching a picture of your grandmother so you would surrender your guns.” If you're already a regular voter, you can help the effort on your own social media by sharing the Shoot the Vote website, by encouraging your pro-gun friends and family to vote, and by challenging self-defeating posts and comments that discourage people from voting due to doubts about election fairness.
