VIDEO OF THE DAY: Big ruling signals bad news for Trump's Florida trial
Brian Tyler Cohen and Glenn Kirschner discuss the news that Hunter Biden's effort to use Judge Cannon's order in the Trump case to rid himself of his own legal troubles has failed...and the ripple effects that could come back and cause Trump some serious legal headaches.

The female Obama? No, Harris is more than that
Michael Tomasky, The New Republic: "This will still be a close, ugly, filthy, heart-stopping election, because an ugly, filthy man is on the other side of the equation. But this much is clear. Kamala Harris is a historic figure. How she has risen to this occasion—her poise, her power, her sure-footedness—has been just breathtaking to watch...She was badass. And she said to every Democrat from left to center: We have one future, and I am the person who is taking us there. As we look at history, it’s easy for us to see the men—white men, except for Obama—who moved history forward. We’ve never seen a Black woman do it. She’s Kennedy in 1960, and then some: “We are the heirs to the greatest democracy in the history of the world. And on behalf of our children and grandchildren, and all those who sacrificed so dearly for our freedom and liberty, we must be worthy of this moment. It is now our turn to do what generations before us have done. Guided by optimism and faith, to fight for this country we love.” If that isn’t Kennedyesque rhetoric, I don’t know what is."

McConnell plots to use election-denier to retake Senate
Ruben Gallego for Senate: Mitch McConnell will stop at nothing to retake the Senate, even if that means giving power to one of the most radical of Trump’s election-denying, democracy-threatening acolytes, Kari Lake. Her election lies helped spark the mob attack on January 6th and has even called for gun violence if Trump gets convicted of his crimes. This November, she'll be running against star Democratic Congressman Ruben Gallego, and it's on all of us to help Ruben ensure that Kari Lake never sees the inside of the Senate. Will you chip in to protect our Senate majority and elect Ruben Gallego?
The right hates kids. It's weird
Jeet Heer, The Nation: "The weirdness of the American right is that it is a political movement increasingly motivated by hatred of children and the young. America, and the rest of the world, is going through a period of cultural change, whereby the younger generation is challenging long-held notions of normative gender behavior as well as racial hierarchy. This threatens conservatives, who respond by demonizing any display of unconventional behavior or adoption of social change (hence the backlash to “woke”). The typical right-winger of our era is an older person (usually but not always a man) who hates talking to his children or grandchildren. Elon Musk, who is increasingly aligning himself with Trumpism, can stand as a prototype. Musk has a trans child, who is now an adult and refuses to talk to her father. This refusal seems more than justified because Musk continues to use her dead name (the pre-transition name of the child) and hurl bitter personal abuse toward her. Musk’s behavior illuminates why the right is so threatened by the families of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. By all evidence, these are robust happy families where everyone loves one another and is mutually supportive. To the contemporary right, this is something shocking."

Leonard Leo’s plan to suppress voters in swing states
Katya Schwenk and Jean Yi, Jacobin: "Behind a new slate of GOP lawsuits aimed at suppressing voters in electoral battleground states is a cadre of lawyers tied to Leonard Leo — the judicial activist widely credited with engineering the Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority. On August 8, the Republican National Committee filed a last-ditch legal challenge in Arizona, asking the United States Supreme Court to remove forty thousand people from the state’s voter rolls by Thursday, the deadline for some counties to print ballots. The case could tip the election results in a critical swing state that President Joe Biden won in 2020 by less than eleven thousand votes. The lawyer leading Republicans’ case is Tyler Green, a partner at Consovoy McCarthy PLLC, a small but highly influential conservative law firm that has received millions from a Leo-linked nonprofit. He is also the administrative trustee of a dark-money slush fund run by Leo that in 2022 received a record-breaking $1.6 billion donation from an elusive billionaire. “This dark-money network trickles down into all of these various lawsuits across the country that are trying to disenfranchise voters,” said Matt Cohen, a senior staff writer at Democracy Docket, which tracks voting rights litigation across the country. Thanks to Leo, he said, right-wing organizations trying to limit voting in places like Arizona and Nevada have an 'unlimited bank account.'"

Here is the speech the Uncommitted Movement wanted to give at the DNC but was denied
Noah Lanard and Rep. Ruwa Romman, Mother Jones: "But in this pain, I’ve also witnessed something profound—a beautiful, multifaith, multiracial, and multigenerational coalition rising from despair within our Democratic Party. For 320 days, we’ve stood together, demanding to enforce our laws on friend and foe alike to reach a ceasefire, end the killing of Palestinians, free all the Israeli and Palestinian hostages, and to begin the difficult work of building a path to collective peace and safety. That’s why we are here—members of this Democratic Party committed to equal rights and dignity for all. What we do here echoes around the world...Let’s commit to each other, to electing Vice President Harris and defeating Donald Trump who uses my identity as a Palestinian as a slur. Let’s fight for the policies long overdue—from restoring access to abortions to ensuring a living wage, to demanding an end to reckless war and a ceasefire in Gaza. To those who doubt us, to the cynics and the naysayers, I say, yes we can—yes we can be a Democratic Party that prioritizes funding our schools and hospitals, not for endless wars. That fights for an America that belongs to all of us—Black, brown, and white, Jews and Palestinians, all of us, like my grandfather taught me, together."
