John, that's me in this photo, 52 years ago, sitting in front of my hero and boss Shirley Chisholm.

I was still in college. It was 1972. Congresswoman Chisholm was making history as the first Black woman to run for President. I had the honor of attending the 1972 Democratic National Convention as a Shirley Chisholm delegate and have been to all but one since then.

I'm thrilled that Netflix released the film Shirley to document my mentor's incredible legacy. It was an honor to be featured in the film alongside the actress who played me.

Now, Democrats just made history by nominating VP Kamala Harris for President of the United States — and I was proud to be there in Chicago to celebrate her nomination. This year's convention has been the most exciting and hopeful of all.

But if this team is going to help elect Kamala, Tim, and progressives across the country, we’ll need a massive influx of grassroots dollars.
