John,

While most of you likely know me from my time in Congress working to hold
Donald Trump accountable for his attacks on democracy, something you may
not know is that I like to do stand-up comedy.

I’m not saying I’m good at it, mind you, but I love going on Bill Maher,
or Stephen Colbert’s show, or Seth Myers, or any of the late-night comedy
shows. And I do stand-up events at the Improv in Hollywood. These days, if
we can’t laugh a little, I think we would all go mad.

Don’t worry, I won’t be quitting my day job anytime soon. But I do like to
laugh and make others laugh too. And I’m a big fan of the Big Lebowski.
When I was last in the Oval Office with President Biden, I looked at the
beautiful blue oval rug and told him: “Mr. President, this rug really ties
the whole room together.”

I also think comedy and comedy shows are a good way to bring new people
into the political process. Some of the most important and biting
observations about our modern political life are made through comedy, and
it pulls in a lot of young people in the audience.

And humor can be a very powerful political weapon, used to disarm a
political attack or point out an obvious irony or hypocrisy. Like when JD
Vance complained about being called schoolyard names, I said that “shifty
Schiff, pencil neck, and watermelon head” would like a word with him.
