BIG news, John: End Family Fire, Brady’s safe firearm storage program, just launched a new Public Service Advertisement (PSA) alongside our partners at the Ad Council!
The PSA is filmed from the perspective of the unnamed “threat” in the household — an unsecured firearm — and will help raise awareness among the millions of new gun owners in the U.S. about the importance of safe firearm storage to prevent family fire, a shooting that results from someone misusing an unsecured firearm from the home.

The campaign comes at a critical moment.

Gun sales skyrocketed between 2019-2021 and approximately 7.5 million adults in the U.S. acquired their first firearm, with 5.4 million adults bringing a firearm into homes that were previously gun free. This major spike in first-time gun ownership tracks with more Americans dying from gun violence in 2020 and 2021 than any other year on record — and guns became the number one killer of children and teens.

But these tragedies could be prevented through the simple action of safely storing firearms.

Storing a firearm locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition is a proven, evidence-based approach to reduce the rates of family fire. However, new gun owners first need to know the importance of safe storage as research reveals that only 54% of first-time gun owners report storing all firearms in the home locked and unloaded.

And that’s why we’re reaching out today, friend. Will you join us in watching and sharing our PSA right now? According to an Ad Council study, gun owners who see our advertisements are 4x more likely to seek information on safe storage versus gun owners who did not see the advertisements. So, simply by sharing our PSA, you have the power to help save lives. [[link removed]]

This week, Brady Campaign staff and leadership attended the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, IL. And with gun violence prevention champions Vice President Harris and Gov. Tim Walz on the ticket, it was no surprise that gun safety was front and center. We heard from gun violence survivors, like Rep. Lucy McBath and Kimberly Rubio, who both lost children to gun violence, advocates like Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, and our very own Brady Campaign President Kris Brown.

On Thursday, Kris spoke on a panel as we launched a new multi-state campaign [[link removed]] to unseat the “Freshman Five.” These five representatives are notorious for their loyalty to the gun lobby and their willingness to put profits over people’s lives. The “Freshman Five” include: Juan Ciscomani (AZ-6), John James (MI-10), Anthony D'Esposito (NY-4), Jen Kiggans (VA-2), Derrick Van Orden (WI-3).

We refuse to let them continue to block common-sense gun safety legislation in Congress and are determined to help oust them from office to ensure the gun lobby does not maintain a stronghold in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Please join us in calling attention to the “Freshman Five” and learn more about our campaign to replace them with gun violence champions in Congress! [[link removed]]

Take Action: Say NO to Ammunition Vending Machines in Grocery Stores!

The gun lobby is still at it, John – grocery stores are continuing to install ammunition vending machines in states across the country.

This is part of the gun lobby's deadly “guns everywhere” agenda, making ammunition readily available next to aisles with candy bars and soda. They are showing once again that they prioritize profits over people’s lives.

The decision to put vending machines full of bullets in grocery stores makes it far too easy to purchase ammunition WITHOUT needed human interaction or oversight. While ludicrous on its own, it also has far-reaching implications: This is happening in a country where gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and teens and where 117 people die from gun violence every single day. Easier access to bullets and weapons is the last thing our country needs.

That’s why we at Brady are asking advocates like you to speak out today: Will you add your name to our urgent petition and urge grocery stores to remove these dangerous ammunition vending machines from their stores? It’s up to us to help stop this deadly trend, so please take action now! [[link removed]]

Remembering Alison Parker and Adam Ward

[link removed] [[link removed]]

Alison Parker should have turned 33 years old this week. But nine years ago on Monday, she and cameraman, Adam Ward, were murdered during an on-air TV broadcast.

This senseless tragedy sent shockwaves through their communities and left friends and family searching for answers. To this day, the televised murders of Alison and Adam remain online for millions to replay and to continue to be monetized, even as Alison’s dad, Andy Parker, has fought to get it taken down.

This week, we’re revisiting a podcast episode with Andy who shares how he is fighting for change in honor of Alison and how to manage your grief when your loss is not only public but compounded by legal battles and conspiracy theories. [[link removed]]
